This panel discussion revolved around the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the film and television industry. The participants were co-founders of Wonder Dynamics, Nikola Todorovic and Tye Sheridan, Antonio Torralba (Professor and Head of AI and Decision Making at MIT), and Angjoo Kanazawa (UC Berkeley Assistant Professor). They shed light on how they’re applying AI to reshape filmmaking processes and reduce costs by automating certain areas like CGI, tracking actors’ performances, lighting, and more, leading to time and effort savings, especially in post-production.
By maintaining the 3D process in filmmaking and allowing easier access, their AI-based tool, Wonder Studio, aims at empowering artists. However, they delineated that despite AI’s drastic impact, it should not replace the artist but be used as a tool to enhance and simplify the creative process. They also highlighted the ethical framework that should be in place while introducing AI in creative workflows, addressing concerns on issues like job displacement and the misuse of other’s work.
