The video outlines the concerted efforts by DFKI and its partners to revolutionize the construction industry through the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technologies. Despite the widespread adoption of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and simulation tools in construction planning, the execution phase on construction sites remains largely analog. To address this, DFKI’s Embedded Intelligence research department is pioneering the integration of AI technologies in the construction sector, focusing on making practical work on sites more efficient and digitalized.
A cornerstone of these efforts is the ConWearDi project, backed by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), which aims to forge new strategies by developing technology-driven services that enhance digital construction processes and interconnect various value chains in the industry. This project has led to the creation of a web platform utilizing Industry 4.0 technologies, facilitating a digital flow of information among all stakeholders involved in construction. This platform is designed to support intelligent planning, control services, and continuous quality assurance and documentation, enabling the use of real-time data for better management and predictive maintenance of construction projects.
Practical initiatives have seen the development of innovative solutions like smart helmets equipped with sensors to improve worker safety and efficiency through features such as environmental monitoring and activity documentation. Efforts to embed intelligent sensors in construction materials, equipment, and on sites are geared towards supplying AI technologies with data necessary for automatic recognition of construction states, remote management, and predictive maintenance. Additionally, projects have focused on enhancing the machinery and materials used on sites with smart technologies, aiming to optimize operations and address challenges such as the shortage of skilled labor through AI-supported systems.
By merging application-oriented AI technologies with practical construction activities, DFKI and its collaborators are working towards a future where digital and automated processes drive efficiency, safety, and quality in the construction industry, significantly narrowing the digital gap in the sector’s execution phase.
