Canada Lawyer Faces Probe for AI Chatbot's Fake Cases

Vancouver lawyer used fake cases invented by ChatGPT in a divorce case. The lawyer was representing a multi-millionaire in a divorce case and filed an application to have his children travel to China. The application relied on two cases where mothers were able to take their children out of the country. The ex-wife’s lawyers could not find these cases anywhere and asked for copies. The lawyer then realized the cases were fake and withdrew them from her argument. The judge was concerned about this because it is the first time a lawyer has been caught using fake cases generated by ChatGPT in the United States. The ex-wife’s lawyer wanted special costs because of the misconduct by the lawyer but the judge did not think she was trying to deceive anyone. The judge did say that the lawyer needs to pay for the time the ex-wife’s lawyers spent figuring out the cases were fake and also needs to review all of her other cases to make sure there are no other fake cases.
